Not by throwing more cars at congested cities.

I’m very pro-transit, but I’m not sure this will do anything to reduce congestion (induced demand works the same for transit as it does for highways). Getting cars out of cities can only be a positive though, parking especially surface parking, destroys the density that makes cities work.
Also to be honest, when we try, we don’t always do so hot: The Most Expensive Mile of Subway Track on Earth

The population densities of American cities don’t crack the top 50 globally.
Way too many of our cities grew after the advent of the automobile. Hard to turn back time.

but that will just allow more minorities and poor into the city
its my right to choose ICE en gines
there is no money for that, what we need is another air craft carrier.
maybe other people shouldnt drive into cities as much so I dont have to deal with traffic.

Expected the French, was not disappointed.
Though first step is to stop the rot in American transit organizations

That article makes it seem like the mob just went legit instead of going away.

Or I’d move to the country. That seems much cheaper.
On a serious note though. I wonder long term if needs for public transport capacity will decrease as people are able to do more WFH with technology or in city replanning where people can live closer to where they need to work. I’m sure someone somewhere has done a study on that.

Keeping congestion constant and increasing capacity is still a good result

I’m more in favor of looking at European solutions and when Americans don’t copy them 1:1, calling them stupid.

Good intentions but housing issues on many levels need to be addressed at thesametime .

More mass transit makes lots of sense in some places, and zero sense in other places.
Tulsa added some new “fancy” buses. Will be interesting to watch how many use it, and if it expands to other routes.

When (by European standards, arguably poor) Toronto Transit System gets viewed in positive light in comparison to some american cities, you know somethings gone horribly wrong. (not totally unsurprising our transit commissioner noped out of NY not long after transferring, preferring to go back to London )

I think that they would reclaim roads, car parks and possibly some bus lanes to put bike lanes, vegetation or other nice things.

Wait, you mean you don’t just make members-only tunnels wide enough to accommodate
a single car on a proprietary platform that shuttles the car around?

And to be fair, no French cities and only 3 or 4 European cities, Athens being the 40th.
Having other means of transportation don’t mean that you have to remove the cars or that you can’t re- use part of the streets differently, for example it could be bike lanes or vegetation or space for bars and restaurants in the front of their stores.

Not *under* my back yard.

It does, and honestly, if I could take a train to work, I probably would.
It was more of a sarcastic comment that everyone calls Americans stupid because we don’t do what they do in Europe without understand there are massive differences.

You could buy 4 aircraft carriers, the big ones, for the price of that railroad.
